Porajmos: The Devouring

We drove to Auschwitz.  It was not on our itinerary, but our cast felt it was something we should encounter. What we found was unexpected. Desensitization.  So many visitors, so much horror safely behind glass or velvet ropes, the mere fact that we stood in a place where hundreds of thousands of people were exterminated almost escaped us. We did however find a story.  A difficult story.  A true story.  It’s so easy to ignore the unpleasant — anything from trash on the street to atrocities across an ocean. If we aren’t vigilant, horrific things can come back. History has a tendency to repeat itself. Witness and respond, some things should never return.
