Malaika may be living a life of cerebral palsy, but her vibrant spirit roams free in a poetic wonderland of its own. In fact, this sixteen-year-old girl’s greatest sadness isn’t her disability at all: it’s that her Baba, who loves and cares for her, is also a con artist “witchdoctor.” Day after day, Malaika is forced to helplessly watch as her father manipulates his customers into giving him anything he wants—and Baba wants…many things. When Malaika’s idol, the famous pop star Lady Ua Zuri, arrives to seek Baba’s services, Malaika is determined to not let her favorite singer fall pray to Baba’s desires. What follows is a spirit quest though Lady Ua Zuri’s darkest nightmares, from which no one will emerge unchanged.
